Chapter 12—Samuel

I can’t find him, I can’t fucking find him.

I’ve called Mason multiple times, and I know the dude feels super guilty, and that he had to go home and look after his Pops, I understand that…but Charlie’s on his own and I don’t know where the hell he is. I’ve been driving back and forth between his home and the port, circling around like some loser, calling his cell phone a dozen times, but he doesn’t pick up. What if he’s lying in a ditch somewhere, in the freezing cold? My stomach churns at the thought.

I let the car turn yet another corner even though I’ve been here before. Twice. And I can only conclude one thing: Mason must have dropped him off at the port at some stage, just like I did yesterday, but as my eyes search for a specific, gorgeous boy in distress, all they find is an empty, dark, freezing street, with nothing but distribution hubs, containers, and ships. He’s not here. I leave the port, frustrated and tired, when my phone rings. Thank fuck, it’s Mia.

“Samuel.” She sounds out of breath and all of a sudden, I’m not entirely sure of what to say.

I can’t find your brother?

I take the main road back into downtown Brooklyn, still searching for something—anything—to say, but she knows.

“Go to Shaolin. He’ll be there.”

“Shaolin?” I repeat, dumbstruck. “But that place is empty and—”

“There’s no electricity? I know. Doesn’t stop him from sleeping there sometimes.”

The thought makes my chest clench and I have to grind my teeth as I take a last-minute turn to the left and speed up toward my new destination. Fuck, it was so obvious, yet I hadn’t considered it. “All right, on my way now.”

“Don’t tell him I know.” She lets out a sad chuckle.

“Okay, I’ll keep you posted. Oh, Mia?” She hums in reply. “What kind of meds is he on?”

“Valium. Pretty heavy ones.” She lets out a sigh. “He shouldn’t take more than three per day, but by the looks of him earlier…” She doesn’t finish and she doesn’t have to.

“All right, thanks,” I simply say.

“Around the corner from the main entrance, there’s a little slot carved in stone. It’s where I hide the spare key. He doesn’t know either.”

“Thanks.”

The martial center is deserted, its soul ripped out, pitch-black, and that’s where he will be, all alone in the cold, in need of my protection.

I’ll fight those demons for you.

It’s a terrifying thought, one I’ve never had before. Yet with Charlie, it feels so goddamn natural. Because we were meant to be.

I follow Mia’s instructions and find the key immediately. The lock turns with a tired huff, and once I’m inside I use the light on my phone to get a grip of my surroundings. We should keep a fucking flashlight in the truck. It feels surreal to be here in the dark—the place I adored when I was a teenager, the starting point of my passion for martial arts. Never would I have
